Specific Phobias: Most Common Anxiety Disorder

Specific phobias are the most common type of anxiety disorder that is defined as an irrational fear of or aversion to a situation or specific object. People tend to avoid situations or objects that cause the phobia. People with specific phobias can have a panic attack or severe anxiety just thinking of what they fear.

Some common specific phobias are:

  • Fear of Dogs
  • Fear of Flying
  • Fear of Water
  • Fear of Driving
  • Fear of Tunnels
  • Fear of Elevators
  • Fear of Heights
  • Fear of Being Closed In

The reason for specific phobias is not well understood, but there is some evidence to support the assumption that this disorder might run in families.
