Cortisol Supplements: How They Treat Low Adrenal Gland Function

Cortisol supplements are most often prescribed as a way to treat low adrenal gland function. Cortisol is sometimes referred to as the "stress hormone," as it is produced naturally by the body's adrenal gland in response to stress. It causes a number of physiological changes, including changes in insulin levels, blood pressure, and immune system activity.

While too much cortisol can be harmful, too little cortisol can be equally problematic. People with adrenal insufficiency do not produce enough cortisol and may experience symptoms like muscle weakness and fatigue, depression, mood and personality changes, weight loss, kidney failure, and other serious symptoms.

If you search the Internet for cortisol supplements, you're likely to find a large variety of supplements advertised for their ability to change your body's cortisol levels. Many of these supplements are designed to reduce cortisol levels, typically as a way to manage stress or lose weight. Others are touted for their ability to boost cortisol levels and treat adrenal fatigue. Cortisol replacement therapy can only be prescribed by a physician, and it is wise to speak to your doctor before treating your symptoms with a cortisol supplement of any sort.
