nightmares won't stop

since i lost my dad i've been having distressing nightmares night after night. i wake up screaming and feel like i'm hyperventilating. it's so disturbing. in one of my dreams my dad was sitting on my bed and i freaked out so i was trying to run for the door but he was pulling me backwards. i was trying to yell for help in my dream but couldn't yell. then in another dream there was a man hiding in my closet and i went to run for help and couldn't run. it's so distressing. these are two examples, it's bad nightmare after bad nightmare. i wake up sweating and so anxiety ridden. then my day is destroyed because i'm so exhausted that i can barely function. i don't know how to prevent these from happening. they seem to be getting worse. i don't even want to go to sleep anymore because i am afraid of the next nightmare.

digby that's rough, i can only imagine the aftermath now of grieving and how your mind of processing everything which seems to be coming through in your dreams. anytime i have terrible anxiety or am really stressed, i'll have nightmares. the only thing that ever helps me is to do things that are positive and relaxing before bed. if i lay there and think of all of my stress it makes my sleep bad and dreams a nightmare. the few hours before bed i try to occupy my mind with lighthearted tv and reading then i ask God for happy dreams and peaceful dreams. somehow that's been working for me without fail.

I am so sorry that you are having such bad nightmares Digby. Have they gotten any better? When I'm really stressed out I tend to have bad nightmares but I have gotten into a habit with my bedtime routine where I keep things as lighthearted as possible like Jules does. I like to read a good book. Also when I am done working and I watch a bit of TV I keep it to something that makes me laugh or something feel good. I noticed that when I watch something dramatic on top of my stress it makes for a bad night of nightmares.

that's so hard digby. you're grieving and on top of it having nightmares. hopefully they'll stop soon but i'm sure that it's all of your emotions coming through in your dreams. i don't get dreams and why we dream what we do but i know that when i'm stressed my dreams aren't good. i know that you'll get through this period. And like millie and jules suggested doing something more relaxing and uplifting before bed is good. try to stay away from anything negative or dramatic. the lighter the better.
