Anxiety Medication Overview: Side Effects of Serax

Serax, known generically as oxazepam, is a member of the class of medications called benzodiazepines. It is prescribed to relieve symptoms of anxiety, both for people with anxiety disorders and those who have anxiety and agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also sometimes used to treat bipolar disorder.

Serax, like all benzodiazepines, can be habit-forming if it is taken for a long period of time, in large doses, or more frequently than prescribed. Testing in animals has shown Serax to be safer than the benzodiazepines Librium and Valium where toxicity is concerned, with the typical therapeutic dosage of Serax lower than the dosage known to cause dangerous side effects.

Possible Side Effects of Serax Include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Blurred vision
  • Headache
  • Dry mouth
  • Changes in libido
  • Difficulty urinating or frequent urination
  • Restlessness or excitement
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Changes in appetite

Possible Serious Side Effects of Serax:

  • Slurred speech
  • Yellowing eyes or skin
  • Stomach/abdominal pain
  • Trouble walking
  • Fever
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Trouble breathing or swallowing
