Anxiety Medication Overview of Serax

Serax® is the brand name for the drug oxazepam, a benzodiazepine that has been in use since the 1960s.

Serax is used primarily for the treatment of anxiety, including anxiety in people with depression, and for the control of symptoms related to alcohol withdrawal. It is also sometimes prescribed off-label as a treatment for insomnia.

Potential for Dependence
As with all benzodiazepine medications, Serax has the potential for tolerance, dependence, and addiction. These effects are more likely when Serax is taken in high doses or over a prolonged period of time. In general, it is preferred to take benzodiazepines at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest amount of time possible. 10 to 15 mg taken 3 to 4 times per day is generally sufficient to treat mild to moderate anxiety, while more severe anxiety may require 15 to 30 mg several times per day.

Serax has a slower rate of absorption and slower onset of action than many other benzodiazepines and is also generally less toxic in large doses. It can, however, be dangerous in overdose, especially when taken in combination with alcohol. Fortunately, the effective dosages of Serax are well below dangerous levels. Common side effects of Serax include dizziness, drowsiness, headache, and memory problems.
