Anxiety Medication Overview and Side Effects of Vivactil

Vivactil (generic: protriptyline) is a tricyclic antidepressant that is sometimes prescribed to treat anxiety disorders such as panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and PTSD. Vivactil is tolerated well by most people, but there are a number of possible side effects that can be experienced while taking the medication. The most notable side effect for anxiety sufferers is that for some people, Vivactil can cause anxiety or agitation.

Most Common Side Effects

The most common side effects associated with Vivactil use are drowsiness, dizziness or lightheadedness, dry mouth, headache, nausea or upset stomach, nightmares, sweating, weakness or tiredness, and changes in weight. You should check with your doctor if any of these side effects are severe or bothersome.

Less Common Side Effects

The following side effects are less common, and should be reported to your doctor: blurred vision, confusion, impotence or decreased sexual ability, difficulty speaking or swallowing, severe dizziness or fainting, fast or irregular heartbeat, excitement or agitation, trouble urinating, mask-like facial expressions, and shaking or trembling.

Rare Side Effects

These side effects are rare, and should be reported to your doctor if they occur: sensitivity to sunlight, hair loss, enlarged or painful breasts, muscle twitching, ringing in the ears, panic attacks, swelling of the testicles, skin rash, itching, sore throat and fever, seizures, and jaundice.

This is not an exhaustive list of side effects, and not all side effects have necessarily been reported to the FDA. If you're experiencing bothersome or unusual side effects, contact your doctor immediately.
