Physical Symptoms Of Stress And Anxiety

Stress and anxiety are largely a result of mental or emotional distress, causing feelings such as apprehension, fear, frustration, and anger.

But even though stress and anxiety may have their root in the mind, they often present with a number of physical symptoms that can are at best uncomfortable and at worst debilitating symptoms that perpetuate the feelings of stress and anxiety that caused them in the first place.

Some common physical symptoms of stress and anxiety:

  • Headaches
  • Muscle tension
  • Abdominal pain
  • Shaking, trembling or twitching
  • Insomnia
  • Dry mouth and/or difficulty swallowing
  • Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea or frequent urination
  • Rapid breathing or shortness of breath
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness and Vertigo
  • Hot or cold flashes

Physical symptoms of anxiety are also common to other conditions, so it’s best to visit a doctor if you have any concern that your symptoms may be caused by a physical illness. In some cases, anxiety and stress are actually caused by deficiencies in diet or physical illness that can be easily treated.

If your symptoms are caused by anxiety or stress alone, the most effective way to manage them is to address the issues that are causing you to feel anxious. Anxiety is an extremely common problem and many people experience these symptoms; fortunately, it is a very treatable condition and a trained health care provider or therapist can teach you how to manage your stress and significantly lessen your physical symptoms.
